Unquenchable's Player Profiles

Martin Roche

Martin as Tom JonesAge: over 35

Position: former 3/4 now flying number 8.

As part of the general understanding between clubs in the masters comp, they all must take their share of the responsibility of accepting Welsh players. Along with Hunting Dog Hughes, Martin forms part of our commitment to the "Welsh solution".

Has a job for life as MC for the annual Quenchies dinner, where his jokes are laughed at heartily and then, luckily, forgotten for another year.

A menacing figure in full flight Marty has set his sights high in 2006, too outscore Walshie, and not break his pinky again, "those backs do pass the ball hard boyo".

Favourite Things: are Colour-Red, Drink-Red Wine, TV personality-Red Symons, band-Simply Red.

Highest rugby achievement: 2005 state champion with the Quenchies, but before that, making the Fishguard 4th team.

Bryan Burdett

Bryan Burdett - The ProfAge: over 35, soon to be over 35 x 2

Position: prop, and hardman of the pack.(geez we need some-Ed).

Bryan a longtime patriachal figurine of the Quenchies lists his favourite pastimes as watching his beloved "tahs" play ,invariably courageously going down to a NZ franchise full of flying Fijians

Bryan was an able Seaman at one time in his long and illustrious career. When his vessel sailed into Box Hill harbour, he was off up the drainpipe at the southern end, and has stayed marooned here ever since.

Realising there was a vacancy for a prop with a dicky Knee or 2 and a dubious sidestep "The Prof" has played several hundred games for the quenchies, and in his dreams, several hundred tests for the Wallabies.

Known for his intense knowledge and scientific approach to the game an honorary doctorate from the University of Boxhill was bestowed on "The Prof" for services to quenchies rugby. Unfortunately BB is on a level far removed from the rank and file and his exhaustive match strategies often get forgotten on the sound of the first whistle, whicis is usually for not retiring 10 metres.

Residing near Box Hill with Mrs, and his 2 Boxers, main objective for 2006 is to snare a well deserved 70's tie then setting his sights on an 80's tie.

Mark Sargent

Sarge aka shrekAge: over 35

Weight: just above minimum requirements for Prop

Position: number one and "the enforcer".

Born in Bluff New Zealand near a punga fern tree, Mark, or Sarge, grew up believing that a ruck was a large stone but, despite this, has developed into a stalwart of Quenchie rugby. To qualify as a Stalwart one has to do enough silly things to create the required amount of mirth for fellow Quenchies to find amusing. Fortunately Sarge fits this criteria admirably.

Much hilarity followed his 5 metre tryline "try" and ensuing squeal of joy at Moroondah in 2005. Who could forget his chip kick over the deadball line from again that 5 mt line in 2004 with only a fairy back to roll over.

Mark lists his favourite pastimes as baiting Dougie mercilessly, and smashing backs at Thursday night touch. Favourite colour lime green and number one, of course.

Highest achievement in Rugby: 2005 state champion with the Quenchies, Big Sarge is looking forward to a physically demanding 2006 season where his main objective is rather masochistic:- to play standoff outside Browny.

Super Coach Paul Moran

super coach paul moran A stellar playing career cut severely short at the age of 8, due to having to work 24 hours a day down mine, in his hometown of Wigan.

After studying the combined writings of successful English Rugby Coaches, during a tea break one day, Paul applied for the vacant position of Unquenchable's Coach. He was successful in his application due to an uncanny ability to find cheap port, fill water bottles, and he was the only applicant.

No-one could dream of the success that lay ahead, particularly after the barren years of the early 0's, when after several coup attempts by the A team, the Quenchies came home with the 2005 Victorian state championship.

This was even done without Coach Moran's "Ace in the Pack", Jonny Orani who had unfortunately tried to hone up his tackling techniques on a Toyota Camry, with minimal success.

Coach Moran, often criticized by technical director Kevin "Akermanis" Walsh for his poor player rotations, nonetheless has the trophy cabinet overloaded and is aiming for back to back flags in 2006.

Paul's favorite pastimes include marble wrestling and wearing skintight wooly jumpers - usually at the same time.

Keith Boags

Keith BoagsA mystery to why Keith still travels hours to work each day in Melbourne when he owns a family brewery in Tasmania. One can only assume it is to be nearer his beloved Box Hill rugby club and the team that would have him play for them, the Unquenchables.

Boagy hasn’t played much over recent years after opposition teams had decoded his trade mark dummy pass once to often. A dicky body will not hold Keith back though, from taking a leadership role in the quenchies World cup bid in Wellington later this year.

Boagy, is known for being almost Scottish like in his disgust at spending money, on anything apart from beer.

Along with Stan McWho, Boagy features as one of the most talked about Quenchies when in absentia, particularly by Dougie.

Keith did a sterling job as MC at a quenchies dinner a few years ago, where the guest speaker, some old Wallaby, had to take a back seat to a serious Dougie roasting session.

Favourite pastimes, drinking beer before, during, and after, rugby games at Telstra dome, and attacking Dougie's logic and mannerisms (this seems to be a popular quenchie pastime-Ed)

Dennis "twinkle toes" Collard

Dennis CollardA Mr finisher, The go to man, Fast Dennis, these are some of the names Denis would like to be known by. We are not sure why.

Dennis, always the entertainer, has started this year by catching everything thrown or kicked to him, to which he will then run 5 metres in even time (5 seconds) then cleverly chip kick the opposition, who would have been steadying themselves for the “thunderous impact” of a Collard bump, hoping not to cop any flying body parts. They would have no doubt heard the stories of a game in Fawkner Park years ago when bracing for a tackle, Dennis merely flexed his bicep and it popped out, many tears. Dennis can be a menacing flight in full sight!.

After an arduos domestic season Dennis likes to cap it off in sunny Thailand where he takes a Quenchies selection to play the Bankok sevens. He takes this tournament very seriously, officially, and doesn't let any of the boys deviate from their match preparations. As a result the respect and admiration the quenchies seem to garner there, has left many lasting ties with the local community, along with some not lasting ties.

Highest achievement in rugby, top try scorer, Quenchies 1999 with 8 tries.

Grant Mahoney

grant mahoneyThe ever elusive Grant R Mahoney has been on the run from the fashion police for most of his life and has successfully based his hideout not in the caves of Tora Bora, but rather at Box Hill rugby club. Fashion they say goes in 20 year cycles, unfortunately for Grantus its not 30 years.

Role models as a child like Lenny Pascoe and Denis Lillee have set the scene for years of cream cords and paisley shirts.

On the rugby field Grant continues his fleet footed efforts where he often leads the quenchy pack to the ball. Is that difficult we ask?. It is when often bearing severe injuries but always willing to soldier on, Grant is never one to pull him self off he tells us, Coach Moran can does that admirably enough.

Highest achievements in rugby, Quenchies state premiership 2005, In Fashion, Vogue model of the year 1976
