A perfect rugby day and we had a full team with reserves in both the backs and the forwards.
The game ebbed and flow from the kickoff and with a good backline Boxhill started to look dangerous. The forwards secured good ball and sent the backs surging to the line only to be repulsed by determined defence from Southern Districts time and again. Eventually Southern Districts managed to score a try and it seemed as though it was going to be another runaway game. With about 10 minutes to go to halftime the Quenchies pushed the Southern districts back into their own 22 and after continued pressure 5/8ths Welti crossed over for the equaliser. Things were looking better as the half time whistle blew.
During the break the team noticed that the hero of the last match who had been carried shoulder high from the field after scoring his first try for 5 years had neglected to provide the mandatory slab and were very disappointed. This moral sapper may have been the cause of our downfall in the second half as Southern Districts started to wreak havoc through our defences.
The forwards ably led by Tony Traralgon, Cameron Gardner and Peter Fuller continued to press towards the line. The backs made several breaks only to find that the support was not there. This was the difference in the two teams as Districts had a plethora of support. Despite Districts scoring 5 tries in the second half Boxhill played the game out and we had our chances.
Next weeks match will be at Melbourne University Ground (Melways map 43 F1)
