On a cold day with the wind blowing from Port Phillip Bay the Unquenchables met the men from Booroondara. The game looked like a complete turnaround from the previous games this year with the Quenchies surging forward driving Booroondara back to their own line and maintaining this pressure until Paul Ramage crossed for the first try of the match. It was duly converted and Boxhill was off to a great start.

Could this be the return to the winners circle amazed supporters mused as they huddled on the sideline? Unfortunately that was it! The team decided that 1 score was enough and they would be kind to the opposition and not tackle. Booroondara ran in 4 tries during the rest of the first half despite valiant attempts to stop them.

During one hectic display evergreen winger Dennis Collard noticed that his bootlace had broken and so as not to disturb the play he calmly stepped off the field to repair the offending lace. Whilst this tragedy was taking place the Booroondara winger was so unsportsman like as to run up the undefended wing where our absent stalwart should have been and scored an easy try. Another candidate in contention for the “Jock Strap”.

Collard was dragged at half time and many of the players were muttering about tar and feathers.

With a change of ends and wingers Boxhill again attempted to push towards the Booroondara line only to be thwarted by poor passing or no backup. Booroondara showed us how to push forward and create gaps in our defences through which they ran time and again.

In one desperate play a cross kick to Kevin (nightstalker) Heath where he caught it and raced for the line only to be brought up short by a younger (65 year old) Booroondara Hooker. Well done Heathy.

With our backline up flat Booroondara kicked through and only the fleet footed Greg Joubert was able to field the ball and commence a brilliant run which could have ended in a try but for support.

Booroondara scored a couple more tries and finally the Referee decided he had, had enough and blew fulltime . Just as well as we had gained our second wind and could have looked dangerous.
