On a cold overcast day we gathered at the University shrine to celebrate the Winter Solstice. (the shortest day of the year) Unfortunately Moorabbin turned up with only 1 man and he refused to play against our 25 so we claimed a forfeit. Fortunately Southern Districts also had a forfeit from Eltham so a friendly game was arranged although some wimps wanted to go home to their firesides but were overruled.
With nearly as many injured players as fit ones standing on the sidelines with excuses as:-
Ribs, groin, wobbley knee, neck and best of all Collard with GOUT! I always knew he was a pisspot .
In the Boxhill tradition a few expats turned up. Jason McGregor from Sydney and George Strnd from Western Australia took a break from his mining leases to play.
Birdie decided that playing was better than doing the dishes so he led the team onto the field. With a 3:30 kickoff some players decided it would be dark before they got home and so refused to turn up for the game. What a game it was – the ball was quickly passed out to the wings and Fast Eddy wondered what was happening as this doesn’t normally occur. With good ball from the forwards and a fast service from Rob Dean at half, the backline flowed and looped (not a common occurrence) with straight running. Birdy forgot that if you make a break you are on your own and found him amongst the Southern Districts players without support. The forwards mauled magnificently and Centre Bird ran through the districts to score.
Unfortunately Southern Districts also scored several times but Boxhill tenaciously attacked and with ferocious tackling by Walsh and Chris (Peugeot) Andrews scooping up any lose ball near him we went forward. Jason McGregor in support of a backline sortie took the ball and ran 20 meters(by Tuesday it will be 80) to score his FIRST Try ever in his career. (A slab will be air freighted down from Sydney)
The second half was much the same with pressure by Boxhill forcing Districts back time after time and it was only some poor tackling allowed them to score another 3 tries. With darkness approaching and an appeal against the light (University refused to turn on their one street light) the referee blew full time. The score was 7 tries to Southern District to 2 to Boxhill.
