Date: 24th May 2008
Versus: Southern Districts
Venue: Moorabbin
Weather: Sunny
Pitch: Good
Score: Lost 33-0
Referee: Mark
Captain: Clive Welti
Man of the Match: Rod Jones
A bright sunny day saw the Unquenchables venturing down to Moorabbin a venue many had not played at before and after Saturday may not want to again. We just scraped through with 17 players after 2 new recruits appeared. Unfortunately we met a very fit and cohesive side who threw the ball about and backed up.
With 2 new players, Fakiki Lox and Vaka Tiko Boxhill commenced to battle against Sthn Districts. The forwards played extremely well and individual breakouts by Rod “the Prop” Jones saw Boxhill charge into the Districts half. Unfortunately no-one could keep up with Rod and when brought down had to relinquish the ball and so effected a turnover which saw Districts charge back up the field.
With French trialist Francois back with his “ribs” and Denise on the sidelines because he was flying out the next day to Asia to bring relief to the Burmese or some other poor country ( they don’t know what they are in for!) the backline struggled and could not gain any fluency in their moves. A brilliant rolling maul by our forwards took the ball 25 meters up the pitch but there again another turnover occurred. The half time score of 19-0 to Southern Districts led to a few positional changes.
The second half saw some desperate defence by the Quenchies but poor kicking kept the pressure on us and with players being injured it required different tactics. We sent on Age and Experience, other wise known as Burdett and Heath a combined age of at least 135 years and a combined IQ. of the same number. Tackling became fiercer and in a breathtaking charge by Heath up the sideline it seemed we would score when he offloaded to “Fast Eddie” who was tackled into touch just short of the line. Captain Clive who injured his jaw and was moved to fullback saved many tries by running the ball out of our 22 metre line and also put in some good clearing kicks. Fakiki Lox a new recruit playing at Lock put in some good runs from the base of the scrum and will be an asset as he is young and big.
The final score of 33-0 as the Referee remarked after the game was not indicative of the play, but maybe next time we can reverse the scores.
