It was a cold, wet miserable day when the Unquenchables met a conglomerate Melton side made up of 2 Melton and sundry other players with the ubiquitous Nigel from Uni.

The game commenced early due to the referee wanting to go home and dry out. The Melton side attacked with their centres slicing through the Boxhill line with only gallant defence stopping them time and again. The forward pack led by “Big Jim” Halls pushed up field and secured good ball from the rucks only to find that indiscriminate and badly placed kicks from the backs put additional pressure on the pack . The forwards were winning lineout ball and Glen Hill was causing havoc to the Melton Lineouts. Disaster then struck! Our gallant Captain struggled off the field with a broken nose and was most distraught to think he would not take part again that day. Eventually the Melton side crossed the line and we were 5 points down and that score continued until half time.

In the second half with fresh replacements back from injury Admiral Collins at half and Clive Welti at standoff the backs started d to make inroads into the Melton half and were only stopped by the desperate defence of the Melton Backs. Melton began to kick through the Boxhill line and chase and only brilliant try saving tackling from “fast” Eddie despite playing with an injured hand saved the score from blowing out. As the ball was moved up and down the field the rolling mauls by the Boxhill forwards was copy book Rugby, unfortunately we failed to finish off our attacks despite being a few meters from the line and were held out.

A candidate for the JOCK STRAP AWARD is Neil the son of “Hunting Dog” Hughes who field a loose ball, ran across the pitch with no-one near him and then kicked it into touch on the full. It is believed that Dougie is re- writing his will.

The game finished with the score 5-0 to Melton Conglomerates .
