Who is Gary Brown??

Wednesday, 9 December 2009

Self penned profile of Gary Brown - Box Hill Rugby Club's Director of Rugby

My wife, Loreen and I have been married for 28 years and have two kids. A son, Darren who is 25 and plays for Boxhill and a daughter, Lyndsay who is 20. My wife was transferred to Melbourne in November 2008 and I arrived in May 2009.

Both my children decided to join us in Australia.

After playing rugby for many years I started coaching at the age of 28.. I coached the S.A. Defence U21 for 3 years and then moved onto coach Durban University U21 for 3 years. I then took a break as a result of the demands of a very young family which only lasted one season!!!

I was then approached by Durban Collegians Rugby Club. . It was here that I spent the rest of my rugby life.... I started with Junior Rugby developing the Junior Club and when leaving the club held the position of Rugby Club Chairman. During this time I was fortunate to be selected as an Exchange Coach representing the Sharks to go Wales and Italy. I was also selected as the KZN Regional Vodacom Coach for three successive years.

In addition to the above, I was also on the Representative Council of the Durban South Rugby Union.

Whilst Vice Chairman of the Junior Rugby we were founder members of an International Junior Rugby Tournament hosting Junior clubs form all over the world.

We also toured the U.K. with 5 teams ranging from Under 10 through to under 16 for a month. That was some challenge!!!! This also included fund raising.

There was many a night that my wife threatened me that I should perhaps sleep in the Medical Room so that would not be late for the next evenings meeting!!!!!!

My vision for Box Hill Rugby Club is to become a family orientated, well managed club that offers professional coaching that encourages junior and senior rugby to be integrated to the point that they all have fun and enjoyment from the sport.

Sorry about the brief bit - but I tend to get a bit carried away - I guess it is the passion!!!

If there is anything you would like to raise with me please feel free to e-mail me -
