The 2008 season is upon us and already the team has lost one of its’ key players. Wilf traveled to Adelaide with the Silverbacks and ended up breaking his ankle. Apparently he was attempting to score a try and got run down. No sympathy. Better to leave the glamour work to the backs.

Who said forwards can’t read or write? Just look at ex Unquenchable John Bailey. John has established himself as Australia’s finest historical writer. His most recent publication entitled “Mr. Stuart’s Track” follows the life of Australia’s most under rated explorer and the first person to cross Australia from south to north. The ill fated Burke and Wills expedition failed in the same quest traveling from Victoria. John is currently working on another historical book about Virginia. Not one of his past girlfriends but the United States state of Virginia. John sometimes catches up with Tom Tabart another old ex Unquenchable.

This year we seem to have recruited a few reasonable players namely Carl, Reece and Andy. What’s more, they are all young! Let’s hope the way they flash about the touch games on a Thursday can be translated into quality rugby on a Saturday.

Next year is our Jubilee (sorry, 50th Anniversary) year so stayed tuned for advice on events to mark the occasion. If history is followed no doubt there will be a shocker of a port for sale which will be bought in case loads by Kevin Heath.

We will be missing a few players for the first game as the Adelaide International Sevens are on at the same time and some of our guys have been asked to stand by as reserve.

Our kit this year is very new age made from sublimated polyfibre to allow maximum performance, speed and endurance when getting changed to play. Our thanks go to our major sponsor Sun Microsystems courtesy Peter Fuller and our other sponsors Resource Agility (Rod Bird) and Caledonian Smash Repairs (Stan the Man). Mention must also be made of the generous support from Zurich Insurance (Stuart Ramsden) for last year’s Cambodian tour.

Doug Hughes may have a dicky heart but it’s in the right place. Doug donated his time and skill to construct our magnificent sponsor bar table which now proudly fronts the main bar. The funds for the construction were provided from the Unquenchables. The Unquenchables have also donated $600 to the club to refurbish the scrum machine.

Paul Harris our new bar manager has taken an enlightened approach to the serving of alcohol. The “members bar” otherwise known as the Harvey Combe store room has been open for business for the past few Thursday nights. Paul is an absolute marvel as he can serve two different bars at the same time. Paul has got James Squire Amber Ale on tap. For those who haven’t yet tried it do so. It is delectable. Paul aims to raise the quality and range of reds and whites for sale at the club. Bartalk is not too sure about this initiative as we have become quite accustomed to drinking turps at the Unquenchables Dinner.

See you at the bar
