Keep up to date with what is on at the club in the coming months at a glance
Here we are at the end of another season already. A review of the team members is warranted.
This year we were lucky go attract some recruits with talent. Ian Saunders was back with the team having missed last season due to a posting in Darwin. Next year he is off to Wagga. We will miss his dynamic runs. Peter Collins and Peter Fuller are both players of quality. Peter Collins in particular has proved an excellent replacement for Quinton Ritchie. Peter Fuller had a bad run with injuries but still managed to make his presence felt around the rucks and mauls. He is now our major sponsor so we need to look after him on the field. Two fathers from the juniors have been a great addition to the side Andy Thompson and Alex Tautau. Both these players can play in the forwards or the backs. Alex scored a bag of tries at centre, We are expecting more of the same next year. Neil Hughes, a youngster made his presence felt until he succumbed to injury, broken fingernail apparently. Chris the chiropractor was another new boy this year but was another to have his season cut short due to injury. Our star recruit was Jamie Meyers who several times was able to retrieve the ball at fullback and run through the opposition to score.
Bryan Burdett turned 70 and is still playing and young try scoring sensation Dennis turned 60 late in the season. Head coach Carl Hunt got married but will still be touring to Cambodia. All those unnamed players under the thumb, take note. We lost Brett to QLD last year but he snuck down for a game against Southern District. Kevin Heath also took the field against Southern District that day. Seeing he has just turned 65 he is seriously thinking of reclaiming the wing position in the seconds. Barry Haydon played his last game for the Unquenchables at our last game. His last game however is the last game of the season with the seconds. Apparently Unquenchables rugby is a little too rough and fast for Barry. Nevertheless, it was a fantastic effort on his part.
Pommie Paul had a shocker of a season with injuries and only played a few games. He will need to get fit for next year as he may be forced to consider a move to the forwards. Competition for positions will be tough next season. There may be a vacancy however as rumour has it Glenn Hill is off to play with University. Apparently he likes playing with chaps who have an academic bent. Fast Eddie has made a seamless move to breakaway and looks like he has cemented a position there. Winger Francois had his best season so far and is already in training for next season. Birdy is practicing his dummy as not one came off successfully for him this year. Mind you, he can kick goals, so he will be signed up again this year. Wilf the enforcer was sorely missed in our last two games. Maybe if we had Wilf, Glenn and Phil Hand for the last game……….
Rod, Jason, Nathan and Tony Traralgon all played prop this season. Tony was only able to show up for a couple of games. Rod continues to improve as Jason continues to …….play. Nathan is conducting lineout throw in sessions at training during the off season. Please contact him for details.
Nico has played his last game of rugby. His shoulder is now held together by transplanted horse and camel tendons. Nico was a devastating player at breakaway (not so good at half back) and his attacking runs are now just a fading memory.
Lance or Larnce as he is known, only did his hammy 6 times this year but bravely kept playing through the season. Clive Welti scored a bag of tries this year but overseas work commitments denied him a full season.
Scott Breen promise to work on his passes during the off season. He has raised shithouse passing to an art form. Ant, Chris Peugeot, and Kevin Sandells had frustrating seasons though work, study and family commitments. Just not good enough chaps.
Walshie only managed to play 2 games in the first five so he took the whole season to get fit. Jim Halls was as reliable a player as ever and seemed to get injured as many times as he does each season. Lover Boy Terry McLennon was another shot down through injury for most of the season but he did manage to play some of the last game. Stuart Ramsden World Golden Mile record holder played a few games for the seconds when things got too fast for him in the Unquenchbables. Steve Perkins managed to fool Sabrina and sneak out of the house and play one game for us. Big strong running Ric Makin had all sorts of excuses why he didn’t play regularly and Paddy was busy breast feeding so he had little time for rugby.
Late season gamers one gamers and few gamers included Matt Frost, Ziggy, Alan Harmes, Lloyd O’Connor, Mike Maskery and Marty Roche. A couple of recruits played a game then quickly faded from view.
All in all a successful season.
See you at the bar
